Cowspiracy, Free Screening At NYU

By Raffaella Ciavatta

“Real social change can be built and will be built when a solid sense of community is established and strengthened.  We are here to raise awareness, educate and promote action towards abolishing violence, discrimination, inequality and exploitation while building stronger, inclusive and forward-thinking communities.”

If you know us by now, you know that we are all about making sure YOU take the lead!
On September 18 2014, Collectively Free and The Student Legal Animal Defense Fund helped organize this event because we want to empower you, we want to inspire all of you to be part of real social change.
Watch the video below to see our process in putting up the event, watch our speakers Robert Jensen, organizer for Collectively Free, Direct Action Everywhere NY, and NY Farm Animal Save,  Neal Sehgal, founder of Evolve for Animals, and a Q&A session.
We would also like to thank our sponsors Terri, Beyond Meat, Neat Meat, Upton’s Naturals and Tompkins Square Bagels for providing us with great food and giveaways. A very warm thank you to the Cowspiracy Team and to all of you who donated. We raised $209 which were redirected it all to The Animals United Movement, the non-profit behind Cowspiracy.

To summarize, here’s what we planned:

1) We made a list of all environmental groups we could think of, such as Environmental Defense Fund, National Resources Defense Council, Oceana, Greenpeace, Amazon Watch, Rain Forest Action Network, 350.org, etc, and since day one of creating the event we have been constantly posting on their page, asking questions such as “why aren’t you addressing the issue of animal agriculture?”, providing them with a solution “have you watched Cowspiracy?” and then promoting the screening.

2) We had some very creative moments and one of our organizers, Carla, hit some of those places in person.

3) We went to as many climate march events as we possibly could and distributed the flyers there.
4) We crashed a screening of a movie called Disruption, and made Cowspiracy the star of the night. Video here!
5) We made this event as non-vegan as possible. We had a full house and amazing Q&A. It was inspiring to everyone.
6) Moving forward, we will always support Cowspiracy and help others organize screenings as well. To host a screening we suggest using tugg.com is where people should go to in order to throw a screening.
